The International Programmes Office (IPO) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi has held it’s ‘‘Around the World in a Day’’ at the KNUST Basic School. The event, which marks the third edition was in collaboration with South Sudanese Student Association at KNUST.

According to Mrs. Yvonne Baiden, Senior Assistant Registrar at the IPO, the initiative, ‘‘Around the World in a Day; Exploring Cultures’’ showcases the beauty of various countries and cultures, offering young learners a unique opportunity to explore global heritage without leaving their campus.
She added that the edition highlights the culture of South Sudan, led by 26 South Sudanese students studying various programmes at KNUST.

Head of KNUST Basic Schools Rev. Mrs Irene Nkansah said since the inception of the initiative, pupils at the Basic Schools have been able to acquire practical experience of cultures from countries like Germany, USA and South Sudan. ‘We are grateful to the IPO for this initiative that allow pupils to become familiar with cultures around the world,’’ she said.

A presentation on the culture of South Sudan was led by Israel Kur Abraham Ayong, the immediate past President of South Sudanese Student Association, KNUST. He gave a brief history of how South Sudan formally became independent from Sudan on 9 July 2011. He said that South Sudan is home to the tallest people in the world.
Their presentation also displayed the flag, location, various tribes, cuisine, music, dance and festival commonly found among people of South Sudan.
Bennett Osei-Kankam, a class Six pupil at the KNUST Basic Schools shared his experience from exploring South Sudan’s culture. ‘Learning about other people’s culture is very exciting. I learnt that South Sudan is known for its natural resources and the Nile River, which is the largest river in the world,’’ Bennett shared.
